If weekly housecleaning and morning cartoons aren’t quite reason enough to spring out of bed early on Saturday morning, then a slate of free movies and deeply discounted snacks courtesy Cineplex should do the trick.

Tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 18), Cineplex cinemas coast to coast offer free movies starting at 9 a.m. All proceeds raised from sales of $2 popcorn, regular fountain drinks and select candy benefit Free the Children, the Canadian-based charity and educational partner working to empower youth around the world.

The roster of kid-friendly shorts being screened is eclectic to say the least: Escape from Planet Earth, Ender’s Game, Walking With Dinosaurs (3D), Paranorman (3D), Divergent and Free Birds screening through to about 10:30 am.

“Community Day is an opportunity for Canadian families to come together and enjoy a morning at the movies in support of a great cause,” Pat Marshall, vice president, communications and investor relations, Cineplex Entertainment, comments in a release on the now four-year-old partnership between Cineplex and Free the Children.

Marshall continues: “As one of Canada’s largest employers of youth, we invite all Canadians to join us at their local Cineplex theatre, and to help Free the Children empower youth across Canada.”

Doors to the theatres open at 8:30 a.m., with the first movies beginning at 9:00 a.m. Seating for each movie is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. All locations will return to regular programming on the afternoon of Oct. 18.

In a press statement, Marc Kielburger, Co-Founder of Free The Children, said: “Free The Children is excited to be partnering with Cineplex to bring local communities together in support of young people right here in Canada. Community Day allows families to spend time together while helping to empower young people to reach their full potential as agents of change in their local and global communities.”

Indeed, the Cineplex/Free the Children partnership goes beyond Saturday mornings at the movies. For example, the Cineplex Volunteer of the Month Program, staged in concert with Free the Children, rewards youth working at the theatre chain (and those outside it) who volunteer in the community with perks including free movie passes, and of course, serious bragging rights.

As for this Saturday’s free cinema event, don’t forget to load up on those concession snacks!
