TOMS One Day Without Shoes Doesn’t Require Pedicures or Boss Approval
You are here
If your boss asks you why you’re not wearing shoes and socks on April 29, tell them it’s TOMS’ seventh annual One Day Without Shoes event. We’re sure he or she will understand. The philanthropic footwear company — which donates one pair of new shoes to a child in need for every pair bought — is trying to raise global awareness for children’s health and education with this simple barefoot act.
TOMS is asking people share photos of themselves — presumably showing their bare feet (no pedicure required) via social media, tagging @TOMS #withoutshoes #TOMS or #TOMSCanada (depending on your locale).
“It’s humbling to think that One Day Without Shoes started on a college campus seven years ago, and now we’re seeing participation from across the globe,” TOMS’ founder Blake Mycoskie said in a press statement.
Mycoskie founded the for-profit company with the philanthropic promise after a 2006 trip to Argentina where he encountered children running around without shoes. the “one for one” retailer has since given over 10 million pairs of new shoes to children in need in 60 countries around the world, according to company materials (he also started eyewear and coffee companies based on a similar model).
“One Day Without Shoes calls attention to three key issues that affect a child’s development — health, education and empowerment,” says the press release. “Millions of children around the world live without proper footwear, exposing them to injury, infection and debilitating diseases every day. Shoes help protect kids’ feet and when combined with school uniforms can help increase a child’s school attendance. When shoes are integrated into programs with larger community development goals, they empower children and their families to get the care and support they need.”
