The National Ballet of Canada was forced to cancel its entire 2020/21 season of performances due to COVID-19 and has launched the Together for Ballet fundraising campaign to partially compensate for the loss of ticket revenue.
“The magic of ballet comes from that special relationship between the dancers and the audience,” artistic director Karen Kain said in a media release. “Eight months ago, this cherished connection was abruptly suspended. However I am committed to keeping our company together and keeping the art of ballet alive for you.”
The goal is to raise $200,000 by the end of this year by virtually filling 2,072 theatre seats through donating the value of a seat. A single seat costs $96, but donations of any size are welcome. All contributions of $20 and more will receive a charitable tax receipt.
“With your generosity, our work to connect Canadians with the power, joy and beauty of ballet can continue,” Kain continued. “Together, we are stronger.”
The National Ballet was founded in 1951 by Celia Franca and has been led by Kain, one of the greatest ballerinas of her generation, since 2005.
Canada's premier dance company performs annual fall, winter and summer seasons, plus The Nutcracker for Christmas. It has toured in Canada, the United States and internationally.
The National Ballet employs 120 artists, dancers and musicians, as well as production and administrative staff. All of its costumes and sets are built at The Gretchen Ross Production Centre, and they’re regularly rented to ballet companies around the world.
The National Ballet is committed to outreach and education for families and youth who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience ballet. The company has a range of age-appropriate programs designed to engage with schools and children.
