The Toronto Blue Jays and its Jays Care Foundation have launched the From Home Plate to Your Plate virtual fundraising food drive to benefit Food Banks Canada.

The charitable organization’s 2019 “HungerCount” report showed there were 1.08 million visits to 2,326 reporting food banks, resulting in the service of 5.57 million meals and snacks, last year.

While COVID-19 has shut down Major League Baseball (MLB) so far this year, Blue Jays players, alumni, coaches and management, as well as the Jays Care Foundation and its partners, are encouraging fans to donate funds to Food Banks Canada, a charitable organization that includes a network of food banks and agencies serving communities in every Canadian province and territory.

The Jays Care Foundation and The Sprott Foundation will match donations dollar-for-dollar for the first $300,000 contributed to From Home Plate to Your Plate. One dollar provides two meals, so even small online credit card donations made here can go a long way toward helping those in need of food.

The Jays Care Foundation was founded in 1992. It promotes baseball as a tool to teach children skills such as teamwork, leadership and resiliency through a variety of programs.

Its work includes: running summer day camps for children from poor communities; funding projects to refurbish and build safe spaces for youth to play baseball; and an after-school program that provides a fun environment for kids in grades one to six in low-income communities.

The Sprott Foundation is a charity dedicated to addressing homelessness and hunger in Canada, supporting initiatives that enable self-sufficiency and dignity for those in need. It has a longstanding partnership with the Jays Care Foundation in support of children in Jays Care programs, as well as with the annual Lady Jays Food Drive.

The Lady Jays Food Drive is the baseball club’s longest running community initiative, with this season’s campaign marking its 36th year. It has been expanded virtually through the launch of From Home Plate to Your Plate and will find other ways to support the community if the MLB season begins this summer.

The Blue Jays organization is asking its corporate partners to step up to the plate to assist in From Home Plate to Your Plate fundraising efforts along with those directly affiliated with the team.
