Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell has been named the 2022 MusiCares Person of the Year and will be recognized at a Jan. 29 event at the Los Angeles Convention Center, with proceeds from the event going to MusiCares.

"She is being honored not only for her iconic music and lyrics, but for her trailblazing spirit and the inspiration she's brought to so many artists," MusiCares executive director Laura Segura said in a media release.

The 31st annual MusiCares Person of the Year ceremony, to be held two nights before the 64th annual Grammy Awards presentations, will be one of the most prestigious events of Grammy week. It will include a reception, silent auction, dinner and concert featuring musicians paying tribute to Mitchell.

Proceeds from the event will support MusiCares, a charity founded by the Recording Academy in 1989 to provide music professionals with health and human services across a spectrum of needs.

Money raised from the Person of the Year gala has gone toward MusiCares programs and services that assist the music community, including physical and mental health, addiction recovery, preventative clinics, unforeseen personal emergencies and disaster relief.

"I'm honored to be chosen as Person of the Year by this great charity," said Mitchell, who has been nominated for 16 Grammys and won eight, in the release. "I look forward to being part of this gala that will help MusiCares continue their inspired work in providing a support system for those in need."

The five previous MusiCares Person of the Year recipients were Lionel Richie, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, Dolly Parton and Aerosmith, while the likes of Tony Bennett, Stevie Wonder, Bono, Neil Young and Paul McCartney have also been honoured.

Tables for the gala will be available for purchase here on Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. PT.
