While the label plans to release singles throughout 2011, its first full release will be next August, the compilation Get Money, Make Change Vol. 1 that is tied in with The Remix Project's main annual multi-disciplinary fundraising event, Give Money, Make Change.
“The spirit of the team and artists at Honest Music greatly impressed and inspired us," EMI Music Canada president Deane Cameron said in a press statement. "We see a unique opportunity for our staff to offer significant expertise and mentorship to this label, and to help them monetize the exceptional talent coming out of The Remix Project. We can't wait to get started!"
Staffed by alumni from The Remix Project, including label manager Adiel Papa, as well as from the urban community, Honest Music “is a boutique record label focused on taking creative talent from local grassroots economies to international markets,” the press release issued by EMI states.
“Boasting a fresh, diverse roster of young artists, the label will provide music that connects not necessarily along the lines of genre, but with the hearts and minds of listeners on an instinctual level.”
"This relationship we're forging with EMI Music Canada is literally a dream come true,” Gavin Sheppard, executive director of The Remix Project and Honest Music, said in a statement. “For years now, The Remix Project has been serving as a launch pad for some of the most important and successful young urban talent in the city of Toronto. EMI opens the door to the missing piece of the equation, infrastructure to support that talent's emergence on the worldwide scene. We hope that Honest Music can be an exciting example of social enterprise here in Canada."
Formed in 2006, The Remix Project was created in order to help level the playing field for young people from disadvantaged, marginalized and underserved communities. Honest Music will help those students surfacing from this program have an immediate home for their music or other artistic or business skills.
