Free Movies At Cineplex Theatres This Saturday To Support Free The Children

You are here

One hundred fifty-six separate theatre locations will open their doors for free Cineplex Community Day movie screenings to support WE's Free The Children campaign on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 24.

The free screenings will begin at 9 a.m. locally and continue until regular paid screenings begin in the afternoon. Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis with guests having the choice of viewing Despicable Me 2, Fast & Furious 6, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, Pitch Perfect, Hop or Dumb and Dumber To. Though the screening will be free each Cineplex location will be accepting donations to Free The Children. Additionally, select coffee, popcorn, soft drinks and candy concession items as well as an exclusive mini-Rafiki friendship bracelets will be sold for $2 with all proceeds also going towards Free The Children.

"Last year the 125,000 Canadians that came to our theatres on Community Day helped us to raise over $530,000 in one morning and I hope that this year we’ll raise even more," said Ellis Jacob, president and chief executive officer of Cineplex Entertainment, in a press release. "We know that great movies can inspire change so we invite Canadians to join us in supporting Free The Children to empower youth across our country and around the globe."

The folks at Free The Children appreciate the support.

"Community Day is a wonderful way for families across Canada to spark conversations about getting involved in making positive change in their communities," said Marc Kielburger, co-founder of Free The Children. "We are proud to partner with Cineplex on initiatives that bring families together, and empower young Canadians by giving them the tools to create transformative change and fuel their passion for making a difference."

An international charity founded in 1995, Free The Children activates and supports youth both domestically through leadership programs and around the world through projects such as their Adopt A Village initiative. In addition to supporting things like this, monies from Cineplex Community Day will also support related initiatives like WE Day, a star-studded annual event meant to inspire young students through sharing their achievements.

This will be the fifth year for the free movie Cineplex Community Day event, with the company having raised $1.7 million towards Canadian charities in previous years.
