Some of the late jazz pianist Oscar Peterson's most intriguing possessions are up for auction and part of the proceeds will go to World Vision Canada.
The Oscar Peterson Auction, which launched Aug. 14 on eBay Canada and ends Aug. 28, features different lots, including a hand-painted tie designed by Samuel Middleton and presented to Peterson at the 1988 North Sea Jazz Festival, various keyboard road cases complete with his lion-playing-keys logo, the sport jacket and tie he wore to his 80th birthday celebration, as well as various instruments and pieces of recording equipment.
The auction coincides with what would have been Peterson's 90th birthday. He was born Aug. 15, 1925 in Montreal, QC.
"To commemorate Oscar's 90th birthday, we are delighted to share some of his iconic treasures with his beloved fans," said Oscar's wife Kelly Peterson in a press release. "These sale items are a celebration of his life and love for jazz. Our family is committed to keeping his legacy alive while giving back to an organization that was close to Oscar's heart, World Vision Canada."
World Vision Canada is a Christian relief, development and advocacy organization "dedicated to working with the world’s most vulnerable people regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, or gender and working to overcome poverty around the world. In Canada some of their programs include teaching money management skills to young people in Montreal's Cloverdale neighbourhood, offering housing and mentoring support for at-risk youth in East Vancouver and providing leadership training to inner city youth in Hamilton.
Peterson died in 2007 at age 82 due to kidney failure. Among his many awards and salutations, Peterson was an officer of the Order of Canada, a multiple Grammy Award winner, a Canadian Music Hall of Fame member and a Juno Award Hall of Fame member.
The auction isn't the only way to get close to Peterson. It's also been announced that a previously unreleased recording called Oscar, With Love is being prepped for a public release. A preview of the recording is currently streaming.
