Apple has introduced a new iPhone that will be used to combat HIV/AIDS in Africa. The new (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition iPhone 8 was released to retail on April 13. Partial proceeds from the sale of (PRODUCT)RED iPhone 8's will go towards the global charitable fund (RED).

Created in 2006 by U2's Bono and Bobby Shriver, (RED)'s goal is to end AIDS in Africa, where it's estimated that 37 million people live with HIV/AIDS. The charity focuses on countries with high prevalence of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Since its inception (RED) has generated more than $500 million for the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. (RED) has funded programs in countries such as Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania and Zambia.

"Today’s announcement is further evidence of Apple’s leadership in and commitment to the AIDS fight since the beginning of (RED) in 2006," said Deborah Dugan, (RED)’s CEO, in a statement. "The more than $160 million Apple has donated in the last 11 years today equates to more than 800 million days of lifesaving ARV medication that prevents the transmission of HIV from mothers to their babies. We’re honoured that Apple has dedicated its resources to our purpose, and can’t wait to see customers bring our mission to life through the purchase of iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition."

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition will be available in 64GB and 256GB models starting at an Apple retail price of $929 CAD ($1,167.91 USD). Additionally, Apple also introduced the (PRODUCT)RED iPhone X Leather Folio, which sells for $129 CAD ($162.17 USD). Apple has been a long-time supporter of (RED) and the new items join other (RED)-related Apple products including Beats Solo3 Wireless On-Ear Headphones, Beats Pill+ Portable Speaker as well as various accessories for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.

"This special edition (PRODUCT)RED iPhone features a stunning red and black colour combination and also offers customers the opportunity to make an impact in fighting the spread of HIV and AIDS," said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of product marketing. "iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus improve on everything we love about iPhone, including Retina HD displays that are more beautiful than ever, the most powerful and smartest chip ever in a smartphone with the A11 Bionic and more advanced cameras for unbelievable photos and videos. We are proud to support (RED) with this bold new iPhone and hope customers think it is as special as we do."
