Music Heals The Soul primarily raises awareness and financial support for the Canadian Diabetes Association, specially D-Camps, which gives children and youth living with type-1 diabetes the opportunity to go to summer camp. Type 1 diabetes was formerly known as juvenile diabetes or insulin dependent diabetes.
“Kathy and I have been actively involved with charity work for the past 15 years,” says Kevin, who has donated to Canadian Diabetes Association, Wasaga Beach Food Bank, Make a Wish Foundation, Durham Regional Epilepsy Foundation, The Canadian Cancer Society, Juvenile Diabetes, Carley Patterson Memorial Golf Tournament and Rock 95 Christmas Toy Drive just in the past year.
“Our philosophy revolves around helping by offering a hand up, not a hand out. Giving of one’s time is the most valuable gift one can give. As proud parents of six children, we try to instil positive giving values for them.”
The majority of the guitars the DeAbreaus have purchased themselves at either SwapShop or Long & McQuade. Four have been donated to Music Heals The Soul.
“Hock Shop in Barrie donated the guitar for us to have signed by Loverboy, Journey and Pat Benatar,” Kevin tells Samaritanmag. “SwapShop donated the guitar for us to have signed by Terri Clark, Jason McCoy, Gord Bamford and Jamie Warren. Bradford Music Academy donated the guitar for us to have signed by The Good Brothers and George's Music in Cobourg donated the guitar for us to have signed by David Wilcox.”
Kevin and Kathy simply cold contact the artist’s management company to ask about getting the autographs.
“If the band is interested, we send formal request letters from Music Heals the Soul and the Canadian Diabetes Association,” explains Kevin. “The management team arrange the location — some private meeting with the artist or prior to their concert — that the guitar would be autographed at.”
In addition to the other names, April Wine and Olivia Newton John, Gordon Lightfoot and Goddo have also obliged.
“Kathy and I donated the Loverboy, Pat Benatar, Journey guitar to J.D.R.F. [Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation] in Vancouver for their Rock'en for Research Gala,” says Kevin. “We flew out to Vancouver, dropped the guitar off with J.D.R.F had lunch and flew back. That guitar sold for $4,000.
“The other guitars were placed on e-bay, all with reserved bids, but they did not sell,” he admits. “The Rush guitar had over 4200 views. All guitars are with the Canadian Diabetes Association. They are looking at different ways to market the sale of the guitars at up-coming events they have scheduled.
“The C.D.A. have several events planned, and we are told the Blue Rodeo and Rush guitars may be utilized at those events.”
The cause is important to the couple as their daughter Amanda donated a kidney to her husband who was diagnosed with renal failure due to suffering from juvenile diabetes since the age of seven.
“We were approached by a movie producer from Toronto about doing a documentary of our journey for Canadian Diabetes Association, Juvenile Diabetes and the awareness of both illnesses,” Kevin adds. “We are currently in the process of filming.”
The movie producer is Shaun Goldsmith of Pen Name Productions. Lori Gregory, manager of community engagement for the Canadian Diabetes Association, is also working on the project, he says. The band Cutler Boyd is working on the soundtrack. “Angel" will be the opening song.
