“That’s where I rescued my dog Buddy from and he’s awesome. He’s my good pal,” Shipka tells Samaritanmag. She also calls him Bud.
“It was really super. We had one dog and I wanted another dog,” says the 14-year-old Screen Actor Guild award winner. “We weren’t planning on getting one and then I saw online that he was going to be euthanized and it was urgent. I just went to my mom, crying, ‘We have to take this dog!’ And then we fostered it for a little bit and fell in love with it and kept it.”
Westside German Shepherd Rescue holds an adoption event every Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday at its boarding place. Check the web site for times and address. They also can arrange to show dogs on other days by appointment.
“Several of our dogs are in foster homes in various locations around LA,” it says on the site. “Arrangements need to be made with the foster families to meet the dogs in their care.”
The rescue requires an application to be filled out, whether you want to foster or adopt.
“Rescue pays for their medical care while they're foster dogs, unless the family wants to pick up the tab, which is always appreciated by us,” it says.
For those wishing to give up their German Shepherd, the rescue — which says it gets an “overwhelming” amount of requests — first tries to work with the pet owner to help keep the dog.
“In most cases there are ways to solve behavioral problems or find housing where shepherds are welcome,” it says.
If that is not possible, they ask for an email containing a variety of key information from if the dog is good with kids, babies and other dogs to if it has been spayed/neutered and if it is a fence jumper.
